Washington DC Otoplasty
What is otoplasty?
Otoplasty, often simply referred to as ear surgery or ear pinning, is a surgical procedure intended to correct ears that protrude excessively from the side of the head. In the process of surgery, natural creases and folds are maintained, as is shape, unless alteration is desired.
What does otoplasty cost?
The cost of otoplasty varies greatly depending on the physician and the specific situation of the patient. Generally speaking, otoplasty costs between $3500 and $5500. For a more personal estimate, please contact us.
Who is this for?
Anyone who's ears stick out more than normal from the side of the head. The procedure spans more ages than other plastic surgery - children as young as 5 or 6 can have it done.
About the otoplasty procedure
Otoplasty is performed on an outpatient basis, usually under general anesthesia, or local with sedation. The incisions are placed inconspicuously behind the ears, and the cartilage is thinned and surrounding skin manipulated to reposition the ears closer to the head.
What Post-Op care is required for Otoplasty?
Patients wear a protective dressing around their head for several days after surgery, during which time they can use standard pain medication to control any initial discomfort. The ears will take their new shape over the course of about 10-20 days following surgery. Contact sports should be avoided for about one month after the procedure. Most patients do feel comfortable returning to work or school about 5-7 days after surgery.
What are the risks?
Otoplasty carries minor risks which include scarring and potential cartilage infection. As with all plastic surgery, complications may arise from reaction to the anesthetic or post surgery infection.
