Blepharoplasty / Eyelid Surgery

What is Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty, often referred to simply as eyelid surgery, is a procedure intended to either correct droopiness, or simply provide rejuvenation. The eyes gain replenished energy and youthfulness, as well as an improved visual field, when applicable.

What does it cost?

The national average of 1999 surgeon fees for eyelid surgery was $2,395 (Source: The American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery). As with all procedures, the cost of blepharoplasty varies greatly depending on the physician and the specific patient situation. For a more precise estimate, please contact us.

What are the risks?

Blepharoplasty carries few risks that occur in very rare cases. These include temporary swelling, temporary blurring of vision, scarring, and acne (small whiteheads on the eyelids).

Who is this for?

Many people are either born with, or develop over time, sagginess, wrinkling, and puffiness in their eyelids. This can make them appear tired too often, or even make them look older than they are. This premature aging can be corrected through blepharoplasty. A number of patients also pursue eyelid surgery to correct vision problems caused by excessively drooping upper eyelids, or to restore an upper eyelid crease that has lost its definition.

About blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty is performed on an outpatient basis under either general anesthesia or local with sedation. In the upper eyelid, the incision is placed where the natural crease would be and in the lower lid, it's usually placed right along the eyelash line. Excess fat is removed, and then any excess skin, and the area is sutured. In situations where excessive fat is exclusive to the lower lid, the incision may be placed inside the lid, and will thus leave no external scarring.

What is involved in the blepharoplasty recovery period?

Standard pain medication helps patients through any initial discomfort. The sutures are usually removed about 4-6 days following surgery, after which time eye makeup can again be applied. Bruising and swelling will be evident right after having the procedure done, as will sensitivity to light. These effects will progressively fade over a one or two week period. Contact lenses are usually worn again according to patient comfort, which tends to be within about 7-10 days of surgery. That's usually the approximate amount of time it takes patients to get back to their normal work routine, while more strenuous activity should be avoided for at least 3 weeks.
